Governor Kay Ivey has signed Act 2026-203, which will take effect on June 1, 2026. The new law triples the homestead exemption for residents who are either aged 62 or older or have been determined to be disabled. The exemptions for all other individuals remain unchanged and continue to include cost-of-living adjustments made since 2015.
The legislation also sets the petition date as the point in time used to determine exemptions for individuals filing for bankruptcy. State representative Chris Pringle sponsored the bill, while Mobile attorney Vallee Connor played a significant role in its advancement.
“Exemptions for other people are not changed (including the CPI increases since 2015).”
