Logan Smith, a 38-year-old resident of Baldwin County, Alabama, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison on December 1, 2025. Smith had previously pleaded guilty to charges involving the sexual exploitation of a minor, attempted enticement of a minor, and possession of child pornography.
According to court records, Smith became the subject of an investigation after authorities received a report that he was distributing child pornography online. The investigation revealed that Smith had communicated with a minor living in another state over several months through social media. During these interactions, Smith instructed the minor to create and send him sexually explicit videos and images. He also discussed plans to travel and meet the victim for sexual purposes. Law enforcement found hundreds of images and videos depicting child sexual abuse on two mobile devices belonging to Smith.
Chief United States District Judge Jeffrey U. Beaverstock imposed a sentence of 360 months in prison followed by 15 years of supervised release. Conditions include sex offender and mental health treatment while incarcerated, registration as a sex offender upon release, no contact with minors, $7,220 in restitution to the victim, and $400 in special assessments.
U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello for the Southern District of Alabama announced the sentencing. The case was investigated by the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Beth Stepan and Kacey Chappelear prosecuted the case.
The prosecution was part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative started by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation by coordinating federal, state, and local efforts to prosecute offenders and rescue victims.
