A new scam has emerged targeting individuals who have filed for bankruptcy. According to a recent announcement, scammers are contacting debtors by phone using caller ID spoofing to make it appear as if the call is coming from the bankruptcy court. The callers claim that the debtor owes money to the court and instruct them to pay using Zelle.

Court officials clarified that they will never contact debtors by phone to request payment. All official payment notices are sent through mail, either from the Bankruptcy Noticing Center or directly from the court. Additionally, payments via Zelle are not permitted.

Individuals who receive such calls are urged to report any attempts at collecting payment to the Clerk’s Office at (205) 714-4000.
