Federal grand jury indicts two for arson and terrorism conspiracy at Alabama Walmart

A federal grand jury has indicted two Birmingham residents, Lillian Jayne Colburn and Mercutio Terrell Southall, on charges related to a fire set inside a local business. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.

According to the indictment filed in U.S. District Court, Colburn, 26, and Southall, 41, are charged with arson and conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. The incident took place at the Walmart Supercenter on Lakeshore Parkway in Homewood, Alabama, on August 25, 2025.

The investigation into the case was conducted by the FBI in collaboration with the Homewood Police Department and the Irondale Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney W. Lee Gilmer is handling the prosecution.

“An indictment contains only charges. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty,” stated the press release.
