A Jefferson County resident has been found guilty on several federal drug and firearm charges, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.

Jaylin Artez Patton, 29, of Birmingham, was convicted by a federal jury after three days of testimony before U.S. District Court Judge Annemarie C. Axon. The charges include being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a machinegun, possession of fentanyl, and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.

Evidence presented at trial showed that officers from the Birmingham Police Department, with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), attempted to stop Patton in order to execute an arrest warrant. According to the evidence, Patton fled from law enforcement and led them on both a vehicle and foot pursuit before being apprehended.

During the incident, officers recovered fentanyl and a Glock pistol modified with a conversion device commonly known as a “Glock switch,” turning it into a machinegun.

The ATF and Birmingham Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys William R. McComb and Darius Greene are handling the prosecution.

U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona stated: “A federal jury has convicted a Jefferson County man on drug and gun charges.”
