A Mobile man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. According to court documents, on August 18, 2024, the Mobile Police Department responded to a local hotel following reports of a shooting. Reginald Thompson, age 50, fired rounds into the wall in the bathroom area, claiming someone was breaking in. Surveillance footage later showed that no one was near Thompson’s room before law enforcement arrived. Thompson admitted to possessing the firearm. He has several prior felony convictions and is legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

Thompson will also serve a three-year supervised release term after his incarceration and must pay a $100 special assessment.

U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello of the Southern District of Alabama announced the sentence.

The case was investigated by the Mobile Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tandice H. Blackwood prosecuted the case for the United States.

“This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime. Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).”
