A federal grand jury in Birmingham, Alabama, has indicted two individuals on charges related to the sexual exploitation of children, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Catherine L. Crosby.

Steven Roshee Powell, also known as “Champ G,” age 35 and a resident of Birmingham, is charged with two counts: sex trafficking of children and attempted sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion. The alleged offenses took place in Jefferson County between October 2 and October 29, 2025.

Adam Joseph Hegler, 46, from Hueytown, faces a two-count indictment for distribution and possession of child pornography. These incidents are said to have occurred in Jefferson County between November 2024 and April 2025.

Authorities urge anyone who suspects or becomes aware of possible sexual exploitation of a child to contact law enforcement. Reports can be filed with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) or online at www.cybertipline.org.

The indictments were issued as part of Project Safe Childhood. “Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet and to identify and rescue victims,” according to information about the initiative. More details about Project Safe Childhood can be found at www.projectsafechildhood.gov.

Homeland Security Investigations worked with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on these cases. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel S. McBrayer is prosecuting both cases.

“An indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty,” officials stated.
